Our yard looks amazing.. The lavender and dark pink bee balm is in bloom, Casa Blanca is almost in bloom, the Asiatic is in bloom as well as two of the day lilies, globe thistle, pink phlox, cleomes, daisies (three kinds), thymes (four kinds), all three hostas and the catnip is growing quite week. it's beautiful.
I bought a climbing (yellow) rose that I thought was dead but seems to be making a come back.
I love summer

When I was a little girl, a snake lived at the end of our driveway in the rockwall. Now a snake is living my garden. I've run like a littke girl into the house many times already.. Omar, I've named him, is just a garden snake but still.. He's a snake in my garden!
If he gets rid of the creature that was stealing my bulbs and pooping everywhere, unknown animal poo on your hand is discusting, then I'll reward him.. I have too many cats as is.. :)When I was a little girl, a snake lived at the end of our driveway in the rock wall. Now a snake is living my garden. Yesterday was the first day the heat let up in over a week, It was a cool seventy degrees. I took advantage and planted my littlle heart out.. A few weeks back my mother and I were going to start a garden on the side of the barn.. We bought all sorts of stuff and it just never came together. So I took all the stuff (black and double hollyhock, yarrow, cleomes and tomato) and planted them in various locations around the yard.
The hollyhocks went out to the small garden surrounding a telephone pole in the front field.. Already in the garden was a pink hollyhock and an iris. I also put some chocolate mint, daisy, and a columbine (the mom has been spitting off babies like mad). The cleomes and some more chocolate mint - it was either that or peppermint, I can't keep track anymore - went into the small gardens in front of the garage (we've got about a three foot long/one foot deep garden on both sides of the garage door. My mother planted all sorts of tulips and such but they never took..)
I put the fennel in my herb/flower garden that is along the side of the porch.. I originally had planted an Oriental (orange) poppy there but it died.. I also took my pink and red thyme from my front garden and placed them inside a motorcycle tire to crawl around.. I think once it takes, it'll look great hanging down.

I purchased one strawberry plant for 99 cents for my mother on mother's day.. It's got about a dozen little strawberries growing and one is almost ripe.
Very exciting.

While looking at my garden I realized something.. Only four things are blooming out of probably twenty or thirty. Green is nice and all but really..
When I went mother's day shopping, I went to this garden place in Gorham and they gave me a slip of paper that said if I came back at a certain date, they'd match me dollar for dollar
This fall, I'm buying early bloomers.

"It's raining.. Now we can't go plant shopping"
"sure we can! Put on a rain coat"
"we do have an umbrella don't we?"
"yeah.. in the back of the car.. plus, this is the perfect time.. They'll already be watered!!"
Here we come.. I'll be back later with pneumonia.. some times you just gotta make sacrifices

There are very few things more annoying than being unable to find a plant. That's my situation.. For the last two nights I've been going "where's this" and "where's that". Today I finally remembered about it before it got dark. I was wondering why in the back of the front garden there was nothing along the edge.. That's because I'm missing two plants. I'm not sure if I thought they were dead and I pulled them or if I just imagined the whole thing (I did not but I can't find tags for them anywhere).. It's driving me mad.. I really liked those.
One was some rustic rudabekia (spelling) mix and then the other I don't recall the name.. All I remember is the flowers were pink with white accents and they looked like spiral stairs.

8:56 pm - the back garden
|
The garden near our back porch was really kinda.. nothing honestly. It was about a foot deep and five long with a few bushes that weren't growing well, some astible and a few minor things. I needed a new project and bam, I was digging up the lawn. (three feet deep and about six long) This was my herb garden. I brought a huge lavender plant from the rock wall (a diseased garden), bought three different kinds of mint, chamomile, cat mint, found some bee balm on the rock wall, sage, tarragon, oregano, chives (garlic and regular), rosemary.. Nice stuff. I threw in a wild lupin, my mother a delphinium and some other little thing and that was that.
I really, really enjoyed growing herbs.. I never really used them but still, it was fun. My cats loved lounging half under the lavender (i was going to buy catnip but I had too much as it was) - I even dried some and made a sachet.
This year about half of the herbs died. My sage, tarragon, oregano, lemon balm, lavender, chamomile, spearmint. Dead - the biggest disappointment was the lavender because it'd been growing for well over five years. The one thing I was certain wouldn't survive was the rosemary but it did.
The big plus out of all these things dying was that I had room. So, for mother's day, I went out and bought my mother some things.. An Oriental poppy, blue prim rose, a colombine - not the exact color, mine is a maroon- and a strawberry plant - which is already growing strawberries.
I bought these second year plants.. The woman said if you soak them in water for sixty seconds and water them daily for two weeks, they'd take off like wild fire.. Well, they haven't.. growing wise that is - but the columbine is blooming up a storm
Today I put an orange oriental poppy, that I got at the end of last year because I thought mine was dead, in there.. It wasn't getting sun out from, the other poppy was covering it, and I really didn't have any room for such a bushy plant.
Now I get to play the sit and wait game again.. :)
As a new project I may be doing a garden on the side of our barn. I need some ideas. Tall plants, perennials, full sun.. any suggestions? Thanks (zone 4)
Oh, while driving to the redemption center, my mother and I passed this dinky little plant sale on the side of the road.. I picked up a black Hollyhock and some mixed hollyhock. I can't leave the house with money.. I never return with it.. Bah, I did good.. there were these midnight blue irises that I loved.. Self Control
We're going to hold off on planting them until after the frost later in the week.. They're just babies (I wish she would have had these.. Gorgeous)
Well, maybe soon I'll actually have something interesting to say.. The darn bugs are just so bad, you can't stay out that long. Take care
current mood: excited

8:30 pm - The front garden
|
Okay, hey everyone.. Thanks for stopping by. If you want to know the basics about me, click on the profile link.
I Love gardening.. Around this time last year I picked it up again as a hobby and after spending lots of money on plants and mulch, I'm obsessed.
I started this just as a place for me to write about how my gardens were doing, what I wanted to do for future projects and possibly meet some people. (I made a big fuss today about how I don't have any gardening friends). Unless you enjoy gardening, you wont find this interesting.. It's quite possible you wont find it interesting even if you do garden.. haha
err, yeah. I'm kicking around the idea of getting a digital camera for my birthday so possibly soon there might be some photos.
Back story -
Last year, on a whim, I expanded my three foot by three foot garden. When I was younger this was my garden but as the years went on I lost interest, a few years back my mother also lost interest in it. It was mostly grass with an Oriental Poppy, some wild prim rose, a few irises and some spiders wort (I believe that's the name).. Now it's probably ten feet long and the width varies from area to area.. It wraps around a tree, has a bird bath, three hostas and atleast 25 different plants - I can make a list sometime if you want). Half is full sun, the other full shade.. To me it's the perfect place to have a garden.
Boy oh boy wasn't in torture waiting for those darn plants to grow. My mother kept saying "Get some annuals, get some annuals" but no, I have a thing with annuals.. I know that they're pretty and give something instantly but seriously, it's a waste of money to me.. (i'm so cheap) I mean, I can buy a plant that'll possibly last me years instead of buying a flat of annuals that'll only last a few months. Slowly things grew.. The first year everything bloomed, I was shocked. This year everything has doubled in size. It's nice
I'll get into the back garden later.
